Paul Aplin was for many years a tax and IT partner for an independent West Country firm in 1997. In 1997 he filed the UK’s first electronic self-assessment tax return and has stayed closely involved with digital developments in tax ever since. He was a member of HMRC’s Charter Project Board which oversaw the implementation of Lord Carter’s proposals for digitalisation of tax returns. He currently sits on the HMRC’s Administrative Burdens Advisory Board and the Board of the Office of Tax Simplification.
A former Chair of the ICEW’s Tax Faculty , he was the ICAEW’s President in 2018/19 and now sits on the Tax Faculty Board, CIOT Council and the Tax Technology Committee of CFE. In 2009 he was appointed OBE for services to the accountancy profession and public service.
